UC Irvine’s Artists Featured in Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2025 Biennial
Four Department of Art faculty and alumni featured
Hammer Museum has announced 27 artists selected for the 2025 Made in L.A., the highly anticipated biennial showcasing contemporary artists working in the greater Los Angeles area. Among them are four artists from UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts, including Department of Art Professors Bruce Yonemoto and Amanda Ross-Ho, Assistant Professor Na Mira and rising undergraduate alumnus Freddy Villalobos ’16.
Curated by Essence Harden and Paulina Pobocha, this year’s edition of the biennial eschews a singular theme, instead emphasizing an intergenerational array of artists working across experimental film, sculpture, painting and choreography. The exhibition runs from October 5, 2025, through January 4, 2026.
About the Artists:
Bruce Yonemoto’s work navigates the intersection of fine art and mass media, interrogating how visual culture shapes historical narratives. Yonemoto's practice spans video, photography, installation and sculpture, continually challenging the boundaries between art and commerce.
Amanda Ross-Ho operates within a fluid network of personal and universal symbols, constructing visual systems that explore production, presentation and the social conditions of viewership. Ross-Ho's multidisciplinary approach spans sculpture, painting, photography, installation and public works.
Na Mira engages with the mechanics of perception, using video, film, sculpture and text to dismantle traditional image-making practices. Mira's work embraces animism as a means of disrupting established historical and cultural frameworks.
Freddy Villalobos explores masculinity and identity through a lens informed by experiences in Los Angeles and the Bronx. Villalobos' work, grounded in materiality and form, examines cultural inheritance and personal mythology.
Since its inception, Made in L.A. has remained a definitive survey of contemporary artistic production in Los Angeles. The inclusion of UC Irvine artists in the 2025 edition underscores the ongoing impact of the university’s art faculty and alumni within the field. Their presence in this year’s biennial highlights the art department’s continued impact in shaping critical voices in contemporary practice.
